Description

THE TYRANNY OF THE NIGHT by GLEN COOK
Instrumentalities of the Night, book 1

In the center of the world, the Patriarchs of the West and the Pramans have an uneasy truce over ownership of the Wells of Ihrain in the Holy Land, the source of the greatest magic.  Around the edges of the world, the walls of ice advance slowly, reclaiming the land for The Dark and its imps, demons, and dark gods.

One day the Praman warrior Else is attacked by a minor god of The Dark, and, not realizing the consequences, defeats him.  As a reward, Else is sent to the West as a spy, but The Dark has now marked him for assassination.

Underlying the action are inner questions of the soul. When Else is absorbed into the West, he realizes they aren't better or worse than the Praman--for whom, then, should he fight?  When he realizes he has killed a god--something everyone always thought impossible--he questions his own faith.
